FALL3007 Clinical Pharmacology for Exchange Students

 

The course will be held in autumn term. It consists of eight seminars, each lasting about 90 minutes. There will be a written examination at the end of the course. The volume of the course will be 4 ECTS credits. The language will be English.


Self-study is an essential part of the course. The purpose of the seminars is to discuss the textbook chapters to be read before each meeting. One member of the teaching staff of the Department will guide the seminars. He or she will ask and answer questions and guide the meeting. The emphasis will be on clinical pharmacology aspects of the topic but some basic pharmacology will also be discussed. After the course the students should be able to apply their pharmacological knowledge in the treatment of patients with common diseases. They should be able to perform individual pharmacotherapy, understand the goals of different treatment options (cure, prevention, palliation) and factors affecting the success of treatment. Furthermore, safe and responsible use of drugs will be learned.


The seminars are based on the textbook Rang, Dale, Ritter, Flower: Rang and Dale´s Pharmacology, Churchill Livingstone, latest edition. The book can be borrowed from the office of the Department.


The course will be started with a meeting during the first half of September. In the meeting the dates and times of the seminars will be agreed. The written examination will take place during the first half of December.


The following topics will be discussed in detail in the seminars:

  • General principles of clinical pharmacology
  • Harmful drug effects, vulnerable patients as targets, variation in drug response
  • Pharmacotherapy of cardiovascular diseases
  • Pharmacotherapy affecting the central nervous system
  • Treatment of endocrine diseases, anticoagulants and harmful drug effects on blood clotting
  • Treatment of airway diseases; use of drugs affecting the reproductive system
  • Treatment of pain, inflammation and bone diseases
  • Clinical use of antimicrobials
