Postgraduate Studies at Faculty of Medicine
Changes in the regulations starting 1.1.2012
The following postgraduate university degrees may be awarded by the Faculty of Medicine, University of Turku:
- Doctor of dental science
- Doctor of medical science
- Doctor of philosophy
- Licentiate of health sciences
- Doctor of health sciences
The right to pursue postgraduate studies aiming at the doctorate degree in medicine or dentistry may be given to a student who has attained the degree of licentiate of medicine or licentiate of dentistry in Finland or a similar degree in a university of another country. It is permitted for a student of medicine or dentistry to apply for the right to study, to register as a postgraduate student and to pursue theoretical studies aiming at a doctorate degree in medical sciences or dental science, respectively, before completion of the graduate studies. Thus, a student may initiate the theoretical postgraduate studies required for a doctorate degree already before completion of the studies of licentiate of medicine or dentistry.
The Faculty may find a person eligible for studies aiming at doctorate degree of philosophy if this person has attained a higher university degree in a Finnish university; as of January 1, 2010 this also applies to a person who has completed an applicable higher polytechnic degree (Universities Act, section 37). Also persons who have an applicable education completed abroad which in the awarding country gives eligibility for corresponding higher education may be eligible, as may persons whom the Faculty judges otherwise to have sufficient knowledge and skills for the studies.
The Faculty may find a person eligible for studies aiming at licentiate and/or doctorate degree in health sciences who has attained the degree of candidate of health sciences or bachelor of health sciences or who has completed a similar domestic or foreign examination or whom the Faculty judges otherwise to have sufficient knowledge and skills for the studies. Before this, however, the applicant for studies aiming at the licentiate or doctorate degree of health sciences must draft and have approved a preliminary research plan and resource plan. The doctorate degree requires a quantum of theoretical studies and a thesis approved by the Faculty. The applicant for a doctorate degree must participate in the studies as specified by the Faculty and publish a thesis.
